Clarke’s Boarding House opens.
1830
(ca.) Operated by Mrs. Samuel Clarke, it is located on today’s Ashburton Place (then 3 Somerset Place). At this time, according to Louise Hall Tharp, “[Boston was] a city where every lady in reduced circumstances kept a boardinghouse – if she did not keep a school. . . And fortunately for such as Mrs. Clarke, these customers set more store by gentility than efficiency.” Boarders include Horace Mann, George Hillard, the Peabody sisters, and Jared Sparks. Visitors include Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller.
